What is Civic Commission For Africa?

 ■□   "Civic Commission for Africa (C-CfA)" is a tool for bringing the voices of African Civil Society to the international arena to be created in Japan in 2008, in order to facilitate the advocacy efforts of the African Civil Society vis-a-vis the international community for realising "pro-poor, pro-civic centered development".

June 2007 Meeting of C-CfA Steering Committee (In Ghana)

On the occasion of AU Summit, various meetings of CSOs were held in Accra. C-CfA organised also its first meeting in which some members and TCSF staff have met each other for the first time. In the meeting, they discussed about its administrative system, the principals of its activities, the schedule and others. They have also held a meeting with local NGOs.

■□ August and September 2007 Preparation of country by country “voices of civil society”

In each country, “voices of civil society” were prepared with the initiative of C-CfA members.
► The Voices of Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Mozambique and Madagascar are downloadable from here.

■□ September and October 2007 Participation to “Africa-Asia NGO Network Workshop” organised by JICA (In Kenya and Japan)

Many C-CfA members have participated to these workshops organised in Nairobi and Tokyo, of which the secretariat was placed in TCSF. The documents adopted in these workshops are as follows:

 - “Voices of African Civil Society” (written based on the position paper of C-CfA)

October 2007 Participation to the international symposium organised by TNnet “Re-thinking African development from point of view of civil society - What can TICAD do to achieve the millennium development goals ?”

In this symposium, to which participated about 300 people, including African diplomatic corps, international organisations’ staff and experts, the representatives of C-CfA and other delegates have presented the recommendations from point of view of civil society about the subjects which will be covered by TICAD: investment and economic growth, human security, protection of environment and climate change.

■□ October and November 2007 Participation to TICAD IV Regional Preparatory Meeting
(In Tunisia and Zambia)

Some members of C-CfA have participated in its civil society session, organised thanks to the facilitation by TNnet. In the session, people discussed from point of view of civil society about the subjects which will be covered by TICAD and wrote up the recommendations. They are presented during the plenary by the C-CfA members who chaired each session.

February and March 2008 Participation to the writing of “Voices of civil society”

“Voices of African and Japanese civil society towards 2008 TICAD IV”, drafted on October in the “Africa-Asia NGO Network Workshop” in which many members of C-CfA have participated, was finalized as “Voices 2008:Recommendations from African and Japanese Civil Society to TICAD IV” after the discussion among more than 100 organisations including Tnnet members and African NGOs.
All C-CfA members have participated in this discussion through mailing list and the writing of this paper.

March 2008 Participation to TICAD Ministerial Preparatory Meeting  (In Gabon)

Some members of C-CfA have moved to Gabon to participate in TICAD Ministerial Preparatory Meeting.
“Voices 2008:Recommendations from African and Japanese Civil Society to TICAD IV” in which all C-CfA members had been involved in, was introduced in its civil session and the summary of the session was presented in the plenary by the chairman of C-CfA as representative of African and Japanese civil societies.

■□May 2008 Visit to Japan on the occasion of TICAD IV

Some C-CfA members have visited Japan on the occasion of TICAD IV. They participated in “People's TICAD - TICAD which everyone can participate -“ organised by TNnet just before TICAD and also the civic session of TICAD. In the main meeting of TICAD, they participated as observers. Furthermore, during it’s programme “dialogue with civil societies”, the chairman of C-CfA made his speech as representative of African, Japanese and international civil societies.

■□July 2008 Visit to Japan on the occasion of Toyako G8 Summit

Some C-CfA members have visited Japan on the occasion of G8 Summit. In Tokyo and at the international media centre of Toyako Summit in Hokkaido, they introduced to media the current situation in Africa and explained to them ideal form of African aid.
