Our English newsletter contains information about TCSF's Activities and
Japanese support for Africa. We hope to strengthen our network with
you by sharing information about our activities. Thank you.

TICAD related events in May 2008

As TICAD IV is just around the corner, there are a number of
Africa related events in Japan in this month.

* May 7 "MoFA and NGOs periodic consultation meeting on TICAD"
--------------------------------------------------------------
The meeting will discuss, addition to regular TICAD agenda,
Public-Private Partnership Meeting for New Africa-Japan Relationship.
Participants this time include officials from Ministries of Foreign
affairs, Education and Home Affairs, African diplomats, NGOs, private
companies, local governments, higher education institutions, and medias.

* May 25 "People's TICAD"
--------------------------------------------------------------
People's TICAD will be organised for African and Japanese NGOs to
presents their "Vices 2008: Recommendations from African and Japanese
Civil Society" to make TICAD truly a beneficial conference for African
people. Many citizens as well as government and international
institutions will also attend the conference.
Organiser is TICAD IV NGO Network (TNnet), a network of 38 Japanese NGOs
working for Africa. Since TICAD is a high level conference and not fully open
to the public, the "People's TICAD" will provide people opportunity to
participate in policy discussions on Africa.
*This conference is the follow-up project of International Symposium
"Re-thinking African Development from Point of View of Civil Society" on
October 27th, 2007 in Tokyo.

Other events

May 17-18 "African Festa 2008 in Yokohama"
It is an annual festival on Africa aiming for promoting Africa in
Japanese public. NGOs, government institutions and African Embassies in
Tokyo set up booths for selling African products and foods. The festival
is expected to attract tens of thousands of people every year.

May 22-25 "Cinema Africa 2008 in Yokohama"
Twelve African cinemas will be screened.

May 24 "Run for Africa in Yokohama (Africa 2008 Campaign)"
Ekiden event to raise awareness on Africa. Many famous athletes and
citizens will run for Africa for 2 hours 4 minutes which is Haile
Gebrselassie's marathon world record.

May 26-27 "MISIA Africa Benefit Live Yokohama"
A concert calling for "taking action" for Africa

May 27 International symposium "Girls' Education and African Development"
Organised by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports & Science and
Technology, the symposium focus on the quality of education with
particular emphasis on girls' education. Liberian President, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf
will deliver a keynote speech.

May 27 JICA Symposium "Asia's Experience of Economic Growth and African
Development"
Based on JICA-JBIC study on the theme, the symposium provide an
opportunity for discussions with African heads of state.

May 28-June 1 "Africa Fair"
More than 40 African countries will display products under the theme of
"Vibrant Africa: a Continent of Business Opportunities" organised by Japan
External Trade Organization (JETRO).

(May 29 Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize Ceremony)
More than 40 African heads of state are attending along with many other
participants including NGOs, and international institutions. There will
be Civil Society Session on the first day of the conference.
